The Association of Southeast Asian Studies International PhD Workshop

Hosted by Monash University Malaysia
30–31 July 2026

Convenors: Adam Tyson (ASEAS, Leeds) and Michael Connors (Monash)

Call for papers

This international PhD workshop is an excellent opportunity for current and prospective PhD students to receive an intensive review of chapters and proposals by senior advisors. Likewise, this is a great way to meet like-minded PhD students and experts working in Southeast Asian Studies, to exchange views on cutting edge research and the most critical issues of the day. Participants will benefit from additional skills sessions on ‘career development’ and ‘how to get published’.

The workshop is fully catered and free shared accommodation for up to three nights is available on the Monash University Malaysia campus for participants.

How to apply

Applicants must submit a title; an abstract (max 300 words) outlining the PhD topic; two-page CV; and a one-page cover letter introducing yourself, your research and why you wish to participate in the PhD workshop.

If you are not yet enrolled for a doctoral degree, please send a letter confirming your acceptance onto a PhD programme.

Participants will also need to submit a PhD chapter or a detailed research proposal (5,000 to 10,000 words) one month before the workshop.

Applications must be submitted to operations@southeastasianstudies.org by 28 February 2026.

Eligibility

Participants must be (a) currently enrolled for a doctoral degree, or (b) have been accepted onto a doctoral degree programme.

Previous PhD workshop participants may apply but applications from new applicants will be prioritised.

Proposals are welcomed on any subject in Southeast Asian Studies.1

The workshop is free of charge, however participants must be members of the Association of Southeast Asian Studies UK. Find out more about membership benefits and how to join. For students and early career researchers, up to three years post-PhD, membership is £16 per year.

Please note you do not need to register to become a member at the proposal stage. Once your proposal has been accepted, we ask that you join ASEAS in order to participate in the workshop.

Please contact operations@southeastasianstudies.org with further questions or enquiries.
