Indonesia’s 2024 Elections: Political Brokerage and Gender Representation
Thursday 13 July 2023 / 12.00-1.15pm BST / Online

Image: Vote! by Ikhlasul Amalmo/Flickr; Licence: CC BY-NC 2.0.

Join ASEAS for a fascinating webinar examining brokerage politics and women’s representation in post-pandemic political discourse in the run up to Indonesia’s 2024 elections.

The webinar is open to all and is free to attend.

Speakers

President Jokowi’s brokerage role in the 2024 elections
Rendy Pahrun Wadipalapa, BRIN

In the run-up to the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi), who has served the maximum two terms, has indicated support for possible successors. The president has given signs of endorsement for at least two candidates, controversial Defence Minister and Gerindra Party chairman Prabowo Subianto, and Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo. In what appears to be a pattern of brokerage politics, the outgoing president can use his extensive network of supporters and volunteers to swing voters and influence the outcome of the 2024 election. Jokowi has hinted also at his support for vice presidential candidates, and has arranged a series of meetings with political party leaders. This endorsement strategy arguably demonstrates Jokowi’s intention to remain a major political player in his post-tenure days. Such a strategy creates tensions between Jokowi’s political faction and the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), particularly Megawati Soekarnoputri. This session will explore the ‘kingmaker’ brokerage role in the context of Indonesian politics and elections.

Gender politics in contemporary Indonesia
Vivien Sylvina and Indra Prawira, Binus University

The COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia sparked a form of digital-based gender activism led by women related to job security and access to essential services. Despite the rise of activism, women’s representation in the post-pandemic national political discourse remains poor. As the 2024 elections approach in Indonesia, gender narratives on social media are dominated by topics such as infidelity and domestic violence, with little focus on the representation of women in politics (UN Women 2023; Google Trends March–May 2023). Female politicians in Indonesia receive minimal scrutiny from the media. This session examines the structural factors that contribute to the underperformance of women in politics, explores the disengagement of women politicians with popular culture and narratives, and analyses the 2024 elections as a pivotal landscape for women politicians to leverage digital platforms and challenge traditional power structures.

Indra Prawira is a professional journalist and lecturer specialist at Bina Nusantara University, Jakarta, Indonesia. He completed his PhD in 2020 from Northumbria University, UK. Email: iprawira@binus.edu

Vivien Sylvina is a lecturer at Bina Nusantara University, Jakarta, Indonesia. Her research focuses on media and gender, as well as political, cultural and interpersonal communication. Email: vivien.sylvina@binus.edu

‘Drive to School’ Film Screening and Conversation
Thursday 29 June 2023 / 1.00-2.00pm BST / Online

Funded by the ASEAS Research Impact Award, Drive to School is a short film that documents the motivations of young Christian missionaries Charles and Ai who are striving to bring education and hope to Cambodia’s stateless children. Moved by witnessing the vulnerability to prostitution these children face to make ends meet, they attempt to offer alternative routes to learning and employment. Not without challenges along the way.

Join the Association of Southeast Asian Studies for a free online film screening of Drive to School. After the viewing, Professor Deirdre McKay (Keele University) will be joined by film maker Dr Charlie Rumsby (University of Sussex) for a Q&A with the audience to discuss the film, the subject it raises and the making of.

Dr Charlie Rumsby is a writer, film maker and an anthropologist who has researched the issue of statelessness in Cambodia since 2013. Charlie is interested in capturing the work of those people who stand in the gap for marginalised communities, bringing peace and hope. This is her first ethno-documentary created in collaboration with friend and fellow film maker Pip Cree.

The film screening and in conversation is open to all and is free to attend.
