ASEAS Annual Conference 2023 – Call for Papers & Panels

Extended deadline: 29 September 2023
Please email proposals to aseasconference2023@gmail.com

We are delighted to invite submissions for the 32nd conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Studies (ASEAS). This is our first conference to be held in Southeast Asia and will be held at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Indonesia, Depok, from 27 to 30 November 2023.

We look forward to welcoming the international Southeast Asian studies community to one of Indonesia’s best-located campuses for a lively and welcoming gathering. Building on the success of the 2022 ASEAS Online Conference, the 2023 conference at the Universitas Indonesia will be a hybrid event, with online panels taking place on 27 November and in-person events on 28–30 November.

Proposals are welcomed on any subject in Southeast Asian Studies. We hope to attract a range of papers across eras, geographies and disciplines. As an international and multi-disciplinary scholarly organisation, ASEAS particularly welcomes submissions from Southeast Asia-based scholars and proposals that would develop cross-disciplinary collaboration. Multimodal presentations suitable for the online environment are also welcome, and we invite proposals for screenings of documentaries or fiction films from Southeast Asia.

Beyond research, we are interested in receiving session proposals that address Southeast Asian Studies pedagogy, “impact” and “knowledge exchange,” and the shape and future of the discipline. Along these lines, we welcome panels that include activists, teachers, artists, and other community practitioners alongside, and in dialogue with, academic colleagues.
